Researchers studying the DNA of brain cancer cells have possibly discovered a new reason that these cells grow uncontrollably.
In up to 80% of low- and moderate grade gliomas, they found a mutated metabolism gene that is unrelated to cancer. This mutated gene breaks down the protein barrier between genes in the cell, causing inactive genes to ‘turn on’ and promote growth. When then treated with a chemotherapy drug, they can turn this process off which results in more controlled cell growth and division.
